Handicrafts for Girls
In addition to the obvious benefit of imparting practical creative skills, traditional handicrafts:
Improve eye-hand coordination and fine motor skills
Foster confidence
Build focus, concentration and elongate attention span
Provide opportunities to practice perseverance
Allow children to see mistakes and challenges as opportunities for growth
Promote mastery, and striving for personal excellence
Introduce skills that serve as healthy outlets and quality time during the adolescent years
We have a flexible 3-year plan of traditional handicraft lessons and activities for the children to learn the basics and develop confidence. Each semester we focus on one or two areas of handicraft such as sewing or weaving. We provide various age-appropriate activities of increasing difficulty to work through. The exercises are designed for individual ability and competence while ensuring an enjoyable group experience. The focus is on the process and skills, but children are also encouraged to appreciate the aspirations and benefits of producing beautiful work. In addition, we include cultural lessons by highlighting the handicrafts around the world that employ the particular skills that we are working on. And when possible, we invite local sisters who excel in that handicraft to share their passions and experiences.
